Maryland Wear & Carry Permit (Handgun Permit)

What training is required for a Maryland Wear & Carry permit?

Most initial applicants must complete 16 hours of Maryland State Police–approved firearms training. Renewal requirements may differ. Some applicants may qualify for training exemptions under MSP rules.

Who may be exempt from Wear & Carry training?

You may qualify for a training exemption if you are:

  • Active or retired law enforcement (Maryland or federal)
  • Active, retired, or honorably discharged U.S. military or National Guard
  • A Qualified Handgun Instructor registered with MSP

How long is the Maryland Wear & Carry permit valid?

  • Initial permit: 2 years
  • Renewals: 3 years

How long does processing take?

Maryland Wear & Carry permits may take up to 90 days to process through the Maryland State Police Licensing Portal.


Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL)

What training is required for the Maryland HQL?

HQL applicants generally must complete 4 hours of training (classroom + range), unless exempt.

How long is the HQL valid?

The Maryland Handgun Qualification License is valid for 10 years.


Who is exempt from HQL training?

HQL training exemptions may apply to:

  • Active or retired law enforcement
  • Active or retired military or National Guard
  • Qualified Handgun Instructors
  • Armored car employees with a valid Wear & Carry permit
  • Lawful owners of regulated firearms purchased before October 1, 2013

Training Exempt vs Permit Exempt — what’s the difference?

  • Training Exempt: You skip the class but must still pay the $50 application fee
  • Permit Exempt: Current Maryland Wear & Carry permit holders skip the class and the $50 fee is waived when applying in the MSP portal

Applications, Fingerprinting & Documentation

Where do I submit Maryland firearm permit applications?

All Maryland Wear & Carry and HQL applications must be submitted through the Maryland State Police Licensing Portal (MDSP).


Is fingerprinting required?

Fingerprinting is required for:

  • Initial Wear & Carry applications
  • Initial HQL applications

For renewals, fingerprinting may be required if previous prints are older than 12 months.

Virginia & Washington, DC Concealed Carry

Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP)

  • Typically requires 4 hours of training
  • Applications submitted to the Clerk of Circuit Court (VA residents) or VA State Police (non-residents)
  • Permit validity: 5 years

Washington, DC Concealed Carry (Coming Soon)

  • 18 hours of training (16 classroom + 2 range)
  • Mandatory MPD safety course
  • Firearm must be registered in DC
  • Processing may take up to 90 days

Do your NRA pistol courses include live fire?

Some NRA courses include live-fire range training, while others are simulation-only. Each course page clearly states what is included.

Are your instructors NRA certified?

Yes. All NRA courses are taught by NRA-Certified Instructors following national training standards.


Private & Group Firearms Training

Yes. Our White-Glove Firearm Purchasing Assistance helps students select compliant firearms and equipment aligned with their training, carry, and Maryland legal requirements.


Do you offer pistol cleaning services?

Yes. We provide professional pistol and revolver cleaning and inspection, with transparent pricing based on firearm type and condition.


Processing Timelines (Estimated)

  • MD Wear & Carry: Up to 90 days
  • MD HQL: 2–4 weeks
  • DC Concealed Carry: Up to 90 days
  • VA Concealed Handgun Permit: Decision within 45 days

Payment, Rescheduling & Attendance Policies

Are payments refundable?

All deposits and payments are non-refundable, unless otherwise stated on the course page.


Can I reschedule my class or service?

Yes. Please notify us at least 48 business hours in advance. A $65 rescheduling fee may apply without sufficient notice.


What happens if I miss a class?

Missed classes or repeated no-shows may result in being barred from future training.


What if the instructor needs to reschedule?

If we must cancel or reschedule, you will be notified and rescheduled at no additional charge.
